HACIENDAS: Ecuador is a country with a rich colonial past. In colonial times, the mountainous countryside was divided up among rich landowners who ruled Indian villages like medieval dukes. In the last few years, many of the most picturesque old haciendas have been converted into hotels and guesthouses.
